A consortium of opposition political parties has joined forces to establish a Holy Alliance aimed at fostering constructive dialogue and ensuring a smooth political transition for Uganda. The alliance, comprised of prominent parties such as the National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED), JEEMA, Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) Alumni, Social Democratic Party (SDP), Democratic Party (DP) bloc, Conservative Party (CP), and People’s Development Party (PDP), seeks to address critical issues facing the nation and pave the way for a stable future.
At a press conference held at Jevine Hotel in Kampala, leaders of the alliance, including Joseph Kabuleta of NEED, Asuman Basalirwa of JEEMA, and Lubega Mukaaku, outlined their vision for the coalition. Mr. Kabuleta emphasized the need for preparation in the post-Museveni era, stressing that the alliance aims to go beyond mere opposition politics to chart a course for the nation’s future.
“The focus is on planning for a time when Mr. Museveni’s leadership comes to an end,” stated Mr. Kabuleta, underscoring the importance of economic empowerment and inclusive policies to benefit all citizens. He criticized the current system, which he argued allows a few individuals to control resources, hindering economic development.
Hon. Basalirwa highlighted the historical struggle for political freedom in Uganda, emphasizing the Holy Alliance’s commitment to principles such as good governance, constitutionalism, and justice. He called for a national law on dialogue with clear parameters and consultative processes, stressing the need to address unresolved issues such as the land question, federalism, the economy, and electoral reforms.
Mr. Lubega Mukaaku reiterated the alliance’s commitment to a constructive dialogue for a stable political transition, advocating for the establishment of a constitutional review commission to reconsider constitutional amendments and redefine governance structures.
In conclusion, the leaders of the participating parties affirmed the Holy Alliance’s readiness to contribute to the creation of a new foundation for Uganda, ensuring a fair and inclusive system for all citizens during this critical time of transition. The coalition stands poised to revisit unresolved issues and engage in meaningful dialogue to shape Uganda’s future trajectory.
