In a significant development aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure and connectivity, Mukono and Kira Municipalities have been selected as the first priority beneficiaries of a $566 million urban development project funded by the World Bank. The project, known as the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Urban Development Project, is set to kick off this September, with the municipal leadership tasked to identify critical roads for upgrading.
Mukono Municipal Council is poised to prioritize the rehabilitation and enhancement of several key roads, including Bajjo Road, Ntaawo Road, Nakabago Road, Nasuuti Road, and the road stretching from Municipal Offices through the market behind the town and connecting to Katosi road near Wantoni junction. With a total length of approximately 18 kilometers, these roads play a crucial role in facilitating transportation and connectivity within the municipality.
Meanwhile, Kira Municipality is set to focus on upgrading the Najjera-Kira-Bulindo and Mamerito Road, along with other connecting roads vital for improving mobility and accessibility for residents. The planned enhancements aim to address existing transportation challenges and create safer, more efficient road networks to support economic growth and urban development in the region.
Councillors from both municipalities have been tasked with confirming the selected roads by the end of March 2024, ensuring that the project moves forward according to schedule and meets the needs of local communities. Their input and collaboration will be crucial in determining the success and impact of the urban development initiative.
The GKMA Urban Development Project represents a significant investment in improving infrastructure and quality of life for residents of Mukono and Kira Municipalities. By prioritizing road upgrades and enhancements, the project aims to promote sustainable urban development, enhance connectivity, and create opportunities for economic growth and prosperity.
As the project moves forward, stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impact it will have on the lives of residents and the overall development of the region. With support from the World Bank and local leadership, Mukono and Kira Municipalities are poised to undergo transformational changes that will benefit generations to come.
