Born on 12 October 1975, Mathias Mpuuga hails from the Lwengo District in Central Uganda. He attended Kyamaganda Boys Demonstration School for his primary education and later Masaka Secondary School for his O-Level studies. He completed his A-Levels at Nakyenyi Senior Secondary School in 1994.

Mpuuga later pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Education at Makerere University, graduating in 2009. This educational background laid the foundation for his future role as a teacher and a political leader, as he would go on to teach Geography and Economics at Uganda Martyrs High School, Rubaga.

Political Career
Mpuuga’s political journey began in 2000 when he was appointed as the Youth Chairperson for Masaka District, a position he held until 2006. During this time, he also served as the Director of Masaka Town College and the Managing Director of Liberal Consult Ltd, a monitoring and evaluation firm.

In 2010, Mpuuga formally joined active politics after receiving permission from the Kabaka of Buganda. He contested for the position of Member of Parliament for Masaka Municipality and won the seat in the 2011 general elections. He was subsequently re-elected in 2016 and 2021.

In May 2021, Mpuuga was appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament of Uganda, a role he held until his resignation in 2024 following a corruption scandal involving a 500 million UGX service award.

Impact and Legacy
Throughout his political career, Mpuuga has been a vocal advocate for democracy, good governance, and social justice in Uganda. He has been involved in various initiatives aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in the government, including the Walk-to-Work campaign in April 2011.

As the Leader of the Opposition, Mpuuga played a crucial role in keeping the government in check and ensuring that the voices of the opposition were heard. His tenure was marked by a focus on promoting dialogue and fostering cooperation between the ruling party and the opposition.
