Kampala, August 13, 2024 – Prominent senior lawyer John Matovu, aged 62, appeared in the Anti-Corruption Court today to face serious charges related to the alleged embezzlement of Shs4.1 billion. The funds in question were designated for war loss compensation for the Busoga Growers Cooperative, a group of agricultural producers in the Busoga region.

Matovu, who has had a distinguished career in law, was formally charged with theft and embezzlement. The prosecution alleges that the accused misappropriated the substantial sum intended for compensation to the cooperative, which has been awaiting these funds for several years.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution presented evidence suggesting that Matovu used his position and expertise to orchestrate the diversion of the funds. They argue that he exploited legal loopholes and employed deceptive practices to siphon the money for personal gain.

The defense team, however, contends that Matovu is being unjustly targeted and maintains his innocence. They argue that the case against him is based on circumstantial evidence and that there are other explanations for the discrepancies in the funds.

Judge Elizabeth Nabasa presided over the hearing and, after considering the gravity of the charges, ordered that Matovu be remanded to Luzira Prison until the next court session. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the accusations and the need for thorough investigation and judicial process.

The case has drawn significant attention, not only due to Matovu’s high-profile status but also because of the substantial amount involved and the impact on the Busoga Growers Cooperative. The cooperative’s representatives have expressed their disappointment and frustration, stressing the critical need for the funds to support their members, who have been significantly affected by the alleged theft.

The Anti-Corruption Court has scheduled the next hearing for August 20, 2024, when further proceedings will take place. The court has also warned that it will ensure a fair and transparent trial, given the public interest and the seriousness of the charges.

As the legal process unfolds, the case is expected to remain in the spotlight, reflecting broader concerns about corruption and financial mismanagement within the country.
