Former Attorney General Kiddu Makubuya Passes Away at 75.

Kiddu Makubuya, a prominent figure in Ugandan politics and law, has passed away at the age of 75. Makubuya had battled several illnesses in the past years which kept him in and out of hospital and according to a report by Rebecca Nabaggala, his daughter, Makubuya died on Sunday night at Nakasero Hospital where he had been receiving treatment for a prolonged illness.

Makubuya’s distinguished career includes a significant role as a member of the Uganda Constitutional Commission, which was pivotal in drafting the 1995 Constitution of Uganda. His contributions to the nation’s legal and political landscape were profound.

In the late 1980s, Makubuya transitioned into politics, and in 1996, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Katikamu South Constituency. His tenure in Parliament lasted until 2016, showcasing his long-term commitment to public service.

From 2005 to 2011, he served as Uganda’s Attorney General, a role in which he was instrumental in shaping the country’s legal framework. His ministerial roles were diverse, including positions as Minister of Education and Sports, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Minister of General Duties, Minister for the Luwero Triangle, and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Following his passing, the bereaved family plans to gather at their home in Ntinda, Kampala, to discuss the arrangements for his burial. Makubuya’s death marks the end of a significant chapter in Uganda’s legal and political history, and he will be remembered for his substantial contributions to the nation.
