Kyambogo University, Kampala – Students at Kyambogo University are staging protests against a recent decision to increase tuition fees by 50% for two specific schools: the School of Management and Entrepreneurship and the School of Built Environment. This fee hike does not affect the other programs within the university, where the tuition fees remain unchanged.

The students have voiced their discontent, demanding that Professor Katunguka, the university’s Vice Chancellor, recognize that their presence at the institution is a matter of choice and not compulsion. They argue that the substantial fee increase places an undue financial burden on them.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owesigire has stated that an investigation into the matter is underway. He assured that further details would be provided after a thorough review.

The protest highlights growing concerns about the affordability of higher education and the impact of sudden financial changes on students’ ability to continue their studies. The outcome of the investigation and any potential responses from the university administration are awaited.

The protest has garnered significant attention from both students and the broader community, with many expressing support for the demonstrators’ cause. Students are calling for a reconsideration of the fee increase and advocating for more transparency in the decision-making process. As tensions rise, the university administration is under pressure to address the concerns raised and find a resolution that balances financial needs with student affordability. The situation remains fluid, and the university’s response will be closely monitored by both students and local stakeholders.
