The Ugandan government has officially responded to growing concerns regarding the newly opened China Town store located at Lugogo Shopping Mall in Kampala.

During a recent regional industrialization conference held from September 24 to 25, 2024, State Minister for Finance in charge of Investment and Privatization, Ms. Evelyn Anite, emphasized the importance of supporting local industries.

At the event, attended by various stakeholders including David Wozemba, the Country Director of AGRA Uganda, Minister Anite highlighted the government’s commitment to promoting industrialization as a means of job creation. She pointed out that civil service positions can accommodate only 471,000 individuals, underlining the need for alternative employment avenues.

Minister Anite expressed her concerns that investing in foreign stores, such as the China Town, detracts from local products made by Ugandan manufacturers.

“Donating our money to the China Town store means we are shunning products that are being made by our industrialists here,” she stated, urging citizens to prioritize local businesses in their purchasing decisions.

This statement comes amid broader government efforts to bolster the economy through industrial growth, a move seen as vital for job creation and economic sustainability. The Minister’s comments reflect a growing awareness of the need to support local enterprises in the face of increasing foreign competition.
