As the 2026 elections approach, the Democratic Party (DP) bloc is actively considering former Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, as their presidential front-runner.

This decision comes amid ongoing discussions about strategic alliances within the opposition, particularly following disillusionment with the People Power movement.

At a recent event, Michael Mabikke, a prominent member of the DP bloc, announced the coalition’s intention to support Mpuuga. He emphasized that their choice was driven by a need for effective leadership after experiencing setbacks in their previous alliances. Mabikke also took the opportunity to denounce the pervasive falsehoods in Ugandan politics, highlighting the importance of integrity and transparency in the upcoming election.

Mpuuga, known for his vocal opposition to the current regime, is seen as a candidate capable of unifying various factions within the opposition. The DP bloc’s strategy reflects a broader effort to consolidate support and present a formidable challenge in the 2026 presidential race.
