Hamas has informed the BBC that it will not disclose the identity of its new leader for security reasons, following the death of its former head, Yahya Sinwar.
Sinwar was reportedly killed by Israeli forces amid escalating military operations. The group is expected to formally elect a new leader in March 2024 but has chosen to withhold the successor’s name until further notice.

In northern Gaza, Israel has continued ground operations, particularly focusing on the Jabalia area. The Israeli military has reported that several hundred civilians from the region have utilized evacuation routes to leave the area. Airstrikes remain a critical component of Israel’s operations across Gaza.
In a related development, Israel has also launched airstrikes in Lebanon, targeting financial infrastructure linked to Hezbollah. Israel claims that the strikes are aimed at branches of a bank allegedly used by the militant group for funding activities.
Meanwhile, the United States is intensifying diplomatic efforts to broker temporary ceasefires in the region. Washington is focusing on halting the hostilities between Israel, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Hamas in Gaza to prevent the conflict from further escalating.
The situation remains volatile as military operations continue, and the international community closely monitors developments, hoping to prevent a broader regional confrontation.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with aid organizations warning of critical shortages of food, water, and medical supplies amid the ongoing bombardment. Thousands of civilians remain trapped in conflict zones, with limited access to essential services.
The United Nations and other humanitarian agencies are urging all parties to establish safe corridors for aid delivery and civilian evacuation. However, with both sides entrenched, prospects for an immediate ceasefire remain uncertain despite mounting international pressure.
