Election observers from the European Union (EU) have raised concerns about the integrity of Mozambique’s recent general election.
They allege that some results from the 9 October polls have been tampered with, further fueling unrest in the country.

According to the EU observer mission, there have been “irregularities during counting and unjustified alteration of election results at polling station and district level.” The EU has called for the electoral authorities to handle the final tabulation in a transparent and credible manner, ensuring that results can be traced back to their original polling stations.
The election, already under a cloud of suspicion, has seen protests erupt across the country. Thousands of Mozambicans joined demonstrations on Monday, organized by independent presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane. The protests followed the killings of two political figures, Elvino Dias, Mondlane’s lawyer, and Paulo Guambe, a political official, both of whom were shot last Friday. Mondlane accuses the security forces of carrying out the killings, but authorities deny any involvement.
In addition to concerns about result tampering, reports of voter intimidation, vote-buying, and inflated voter rolls have surfaced. The US-based International Republican Institute, which also deployed election observers, echoed these claims, pointing to significant irregularities, particularly in areas supportive of the governing Frelimo party.
Adding to the tension, Mozambique’s electoral commission has faced technical setbacks. Last month, the commission’s website, which is supposed to publish national election results, was hit by a cyber-attack. The website remains inactive, further complicating efforts to ensure transparency.
The official results of the general election are expected to be announced by Friday, but the escalating tensions and mounting allegations of fraud have cast doubt on the credibility of the outcome.
