In a dramatic escalation of political rhetoric, Vice President Kamala Harris has intensified her criticism of former President Donald Trump, labeling him as a fascist and accusing him of dangerous authoritarian tendencies.
On Wednesday, Harris delivered a blistering speech in front of the vice-presidential residence in Washington, D.C., describing Trump as “increasingly unhinged and unstable.” Her remarks were in part a response to comments made by John Kelly, Trump’s former White House Chief of Staff, who in a recent New York Times interview, suggested that Trump “certainly falls into the general definition of fascists” and had spoken favorably of Adolf Hitler on multiple occasions.

Harris seized on Kelly’s critique, using it as a basis to portray Trump as a threat to democracy. She warned that Trump desires “unchecked power,” a sentiment that has become a core theme of her intensified campaign rhetoric. This shift in tone marks a departure from the more optimistic and “joyful” message that characterized the early days of her campaign. During a CNN town hall event later that day, Harris was asked directly whether she believed Trump was a fascist. Without hesitation, she responded, “Yes, I do.”
Trump quickly fired back through social media, accusing Harris of desperation and ramping up her attacks as the 2024 presidential race grows tighter. Posting on X (formerly Twitter) and Truth Social, Trump claimed her remarks were a sign that she was “losing” and characterized her comments as extreme, accusing her of likening him to Adolf Hitler.
The increasingly hostile exchange comes as the 2024 presidential campaign enters its final phase, where negative attacks often become a more prominent feature in political discourse.
Harris’s sharper tone, according to political strategist Matt Bennett of the centrist Democratic group Third Way, may reflect a strategic calculation. Bennett suggests that Harris, like many Democrats, sees Trump as a growing danger to American democracy, and feels the need to draw a clear line against what she and her party view as his authoritarian tendencies.
While President Joe Biden’s campaign has also focused on Trump as an existential threat to democratic institutions, Harris’s recent comments represent a notably more aggressive posture. Initially, her campaign echoed Biden’s broader themes but stopped short of labeling Trump in such stark terms. Now, as the election approaches and polling tightens, Harris has pivoted to amplify warnings about Trump’s threat to the nation’s democratic guardrails.
This shift highlights the high stakes of the 2024 race, with both sides intensifying their messaging to motivate their supporters and secure every possible vote in the final stretch.
