In Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, Divine Muheto, the reigning Miss Rwanda, has been arrested following allegations of drink-driving and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s licence.
Police confirmed that the beauty queen caused damage to public infrastructure and then reportedly fled the scene. The official statement did not clarify if anyone was injured during the incident.

According to authorities, this is not Ms. Muheto’s first offense involving alcohol and driving. Police reported that she has previously driven under the influence, and her recent actions have stirred public debate. Ms. Muheto has yet to release a statement addressing her arrest.
The incident, which had sparked widespread speculation in Rwanda, was officially confirmed by police on Tuesday. Ms. Muheto’s case is scheduled for a court hearing on Thursday in Kigali, according to a spokesperson from the prosecutor’s office.
Ms. Muheto rose to national prominence after winning the Miss Rwanda crown in 2022, though the beauty pageant has since been halted. The Rwandan government suspended the contest due to sexual misconduct allegations against its organizers, leaving Ms. Muheto as the last crowned Miss Rwanda to date.
Under Rwanda’s strict drink-driving laws, offenders face a fine of 150,000 Rwandan francs (approximately $110 USD or £85 GBP) and a mandatory five-day detention period. In recent years, Rwanda has ramped up its enforcement of traffic laws, with thousands of people arrested for drink-driving as authorities strive to curb fatal road accidents. In 2022, a Rwandan parliament member was forced to resign after admitting to drink-driving, illustrating the government’s commitment to road safety.
As Ms. Muheto’s case unfolds, it reflects Rwanda’s heightened commitment to enforcing road safety laws, which officials say have significantly reduced traffic-related fatalities across the country.
