Tensions have erupted in Uganda’s Teso sub-region following the controversial destruction of a significant cultural site by Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu, the former Deputy Chief of Defense Forces and current Special Presidential Advisor.

Elwelu, who also leads the Elohim Ministries Church in Teso, razed the Ongima initiation site in Usuk, Katakwi District, a site deeply revered by the Iteso people for its cultural and spiritual significance.

The demolition of the Ongima site, which has been a cornerstone of Iteso culture for generations, has sparked widespread outrage among local leaders and cultural custodians. The site was traditionally used for the initiation rites of young men, a key cultural practice that marks the transition to adulthood.

Gen. Elwelu defended the action, claiming that the site was dedicated to “evil darkness” and was harboring malevolent forces that, according to him, have been afflicting the Teso sub-region. He further argued that its destruction was necessary to protect the people from harmful spiritual forces and promote what he perceives as a more enlightened way of life.

However, the move has drawn sharp criticism from Teso leaders and community members who feel their cultural heritage is under attack. Several prominent figures in the region have questioned the motives behind the destruction, highlighting the fact that other ethnic groups in Uganda are allowed to freely practice their cultural traditions, including sacred sites and ceremonies.

The controversial action has prompted calls for accountability, with many accusing Elwelu of overstepping his authority as a military officer and government representative. As the UPDF’s representative in Parliament, Elwelu’s decision to target the Ongima site has raised concerns about the government’s stance on cultural preservation, especially in a country where tribal heritage plays a vital role in the identity of many communities.

The destruction of the site has deepened divisions between local cultural leaders and political figures, with many fearing that the incident could have far-reaching consequences for the fragile balance between traditional beliefs and state power in Uganda.

As the fallout continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether the government will intervene to address the growing tension in the Teso sub-region or if the dispute will escalate further.
