In the ongoing legal battle surrounding the  President elect Donald Trump’s hush money case, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office has filed a letter to the judge arguing that Trump’s conviction should not be dismissed.

The case, which revolves around payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign to silence allegations of extramarital affairs, has been a focal point in Trump’s legal challenges.

The district attorney’s office asserted that there is no current law supporting the idea that a president’s temporary immunity from prosecution could lead to the dismissal of a post-trial criminal proceeding. The DA’s office emphasized that the case was initiated before Trump took office and was based on official conduct that does not fall under presidential immunity.

The legal argument centers on whether Trump’s presidential status at the time of sentencing should affect the outcome of the case. Despite the controversy, the district attorney’s office conceded that sentencing for the conviction will likely not occur until after the conclusion of Trump’s upcoming presidential term. This acknowledgment suggests the legal proceedings could be delayed for several years.

A source close to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office indicated that they would be open to pausing the case for up to four years, in line with Trump’s potential presidential term. This reflects the complicated intersection of legal accountability and executive privilege.

Trump’s legal team, however, has dismissed the notion of any legal repercussions. Spokesperson Steven Cheung described the legal motions as “a total and definitive victory for President Trump,” framing the developments as a clear win for the former president despite the ongoing legal proceedings.

The case continues to be a point of contention, as Trump’s legal troubles intersect with his political ambitions, making the outcome of this case a key issue moving forward into the 2024 election cycle.
