Uganda’s veteran opposition leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye, has been remanded to Luzira Prison following his appearance before the General Court Martial.

Dr. Besigye, who is facing serious charges related to unlawful possession of firearms, will remain in custody until December 2, 2024, when his case is set to resume.

Dr. Besigye, along with his associate Hajj Obed Lutale, has been charged with illegal possession of two pistols and eight rounds of ammunition. The prosecution claims that the offences were committed across multiple international locations, specifically Nairobi (Kenya), Athens (Greece), and Geneva (Switzerland).

The charges have further intensified the political and legal challenges facing Dr. Besigye, a prominent figure in Uganda’s opposition politics. Besigye has long been a vocal critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s administration, and his arrests have often sparked protests and drawn international attention.

The court proceedings have been closely followed, with many of Dr. Besigye’s supporters viewing the charges as politically motivated. His remand to prison, along with the adjournment of the case to December, has left many questioning the government’s intentions in what appears to be an ongoing struggle between the opposition and the ruling regime.

As the legal process continues, all eyes will be on the upcoming hearings, particularly to see how the prosecution substantiates its claims of unlawful possession of arms in foreign countries.
