Sixteen people, including two Britons, are reported missing after a tourist boat capsized during a diving trip in the Red Sea.

The vessel, named Sea Story, was carrying 30 tourists from multiple countries and 14 crew members when it sent a distress signal at 5:30 am local time (0330 GMT), according to Egypt’s Red Sea governorate.

Authorities confirmed that 28 people have been rescued so far, leaving 16 unaccounted for. Survivors were reportedly transported to safety by both aircraft and a warship, according to Amr Hanafi, the governor of the Red Sea region. Search operations are ongoing in collaboration with Egypt’s navy and armed forces to locate the missing individuals.

The exact cause of the sinking remains undetermined. Initial, unconfirmed reports suggest that the wooden-hulled, four-deck motor yacht may have been struck by a wave during high winds. However, no official statement has yet been made regarding the circumstances of the incident.

The UK Foreign Office has confirmed that it is providing consular support to British nationals and their families following the incident. Among the missing are two Britons, with the nationalities of the others yet to be fully clarified. Reports suggest that the passengers included four Britons, four Germans, five Spaniards, two Belgians, three Slovaks, and two Americans, though these details remain unverified.

The Sea Story had embarked on a diving trip from Port Ghalib, near Marsa Alam in Egypt, and was scheduled to conclude in Hurghada, approximately 124 miles (200 km) to the north. Some survivors were reportedly rescued via aircraft, while others were transported aboard a warship.

Egyptian authorities are intensifying their efforts to locate the missing passengers and determine the cause of the tragedy, as families and loved ones await further updates.
