Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, Tanzania’s incoming regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Africa, has passed away at the age of 55. His death comes just three months after being elected to the prestigious position.

Dr. Ndugulile, a distinguished medical doctor and lawmaker, died on Wednesday morning in India, where he was undergoing treatment. The details surrounding his illness have not been disclosed. Tanzania’s Speaker of Parliament confirmed the news, expressing shock and sadness over the loss.

Dr. Ndugulile was set to assume the role of WHO regional director in February 2024, succeeding Botswana’s Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, who has served two five-year terms. The sudden demise of the health leader has left a significant void in global public health leadership.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shared his condolences, stating he was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the news. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan also sent her sympathies to Dr. Ndugulile’s family, acknowledging his contributions to health and public service.

A career marked by dedication and courage, Dr. Ndugulile held several notable positions in Tanzania’s government. He represented Kigamboni constituency in Dar es Salaam and served as deputy health minister and communications minister. In 2017, he was appointed to the health ministry, where he worked until his dismissal in May 2020.

His sacking came at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic under the presidency of John Magufuli. While no official reason was given, reports suggested it was linked to Dr. Ndugulile’s stance on pandemic response, which conflicted with the president’s controversial views on the virus.

In August 2023, Dr. Ndugulile was elected as the WHO regional head, a testament to his vast experience in politics and public health. His election was seen as a promising step for Africa’s health sector.

Dr. Ndugulile’s death marks a tragic end to a career dedicated to improving health systems and advocating for evidence-based practices, leaving a lasting legacy in the field of public health.
