Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning to Ukrainian decision-makers, threatening to target key centres in Kyiv using Russia’s latest ballistic missile, the “Oreshnik.” His remarks came during a visit to Kazakhstan, just hours after a large-scale Russian strike on Ukraine’s energy grid left over one million people without power.

The overnight assault, described by Putin as “comprehensive,” involved waves of drones and missiles targeting critical infrastructure across Ukraine. It was the second such attack this month, causing widespread damage but resulting in no reported fatalities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the use of cluster munitions during the strikes, stating they were deployed specifically against civilian and energy infrastructure. He labeled the move a “very mean escalation,” noting the challenges posed to emergency responders.

“These cluster munitions significantly complicate the work of our rescuers and energy workers in dealing with the aftermath of these strikes,” Zelensky said.

Putin claimed the operation was in retaliation for Ukraine’s recent use of advanced Western-supplied missiles to strike inside Russian territory. Last week, Ukraine deployed US-made ATACMS and UK-France-developed Storm Shadow missiles in attacks within Russia, marking the first such use since the invasion began in February 2022.

In response, Putin confirmed Russia had launched 90 missiles and 100 drones, including the debut of the “Oreshnik” missile. He claimed the missile is capable of flying at ten times the speed of sound and is impervious to interception, although these assertions remain unverified.

“This was a response to continued attacks on our territory by ATACMS missiles,” Putin stated.

The escalation has intensified concerns about the conflict’s direction, with both sides relying on increasingly sophisticated weaponry. While Russia continues targeting critical infrastructure, Ukraine has ramped up efforts to strike back at Russia using advanced Western technology, highlighting the growing involvement of Western nations in the conflict.
