The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has called upon the government to fast-track the enactment of a law to regulate evangelical churches, citing concerns about the welfare of churchgoers. The UHRC Chairperson, Mariam Wangadya, emphasized the need for a regulatory framework during her recent address, arguing that public complaints about manipulative practices by some Pentecostal churches cannot be ignored.
Wangadya revealed that the UHRC has engaged with leaders of Pentecostal churches to address the concerns raised by the public. Issues such as financial exploitation, spiritual manipulation, and questionable practices have been at the center of these discussions. However, many church leaders have denied any involvement in manipulative activities, maintaining that their practices align with religious principles.

Despite these denials, Wangadya underscored the necessity of regulation to protect vulnerable congregants from potential exploitation. She noted that while freedom of religion is a constitutional right, it should not be used as a cover for unethical practices.
“The commission has received numerous complaints from the public regarding manipulation and exploitation by certain evangelical churches. We have discussed these issues with Pentecostal leaders, but there is still a need for a comprehensive legal framework to safeguard the rights of churchgoers,” she stated.
Wangadya urged the government to expedite the process of enacting the law to ensure accountability and transparency within the sector. She also called for collaboration between religious leaders and policymakers to establish regulations that respect religious freedoms while protecting citizens.
