Ghana’s Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia has conceded defeat in Saturday’s presidential election, congratulating opposition candidate and former President John Mahama on his apparent victory.
In a public statement, Bawumia acknowledged the will of the people, saying, “The people have voted for change.” His remarks come as Ghanaians grapple with the country’s worst economic crisis in a generation. High inflation has driven up the cost of basic goods, unemployment has left many young people struggling, and Ghana has faced challenges repaying its debts.

Despite Bawumia’s concession, the Electoral Commission (EC) has yet to officially declare the election results. The EC cited disruptions at collation centers caused by party supporters as a reason for the delay. It requested police intervention to restore order and allow the collation process to proceed.
Meanwhile, Mahama’s supporters have flooded the streets in celebration. Across the country, jubilant crowds cheered, waved flags, blew horns, and performed stunts on motorbikes. In Kumasi, one supporter, Salifu Abdul-Fatawu, expressed his excitement, saying, “I’m so excited for this victory.”
The election reflects widespread dissatisfaction with the current administration, as economic hardships dominated campaign discussions. Mahama, a former president, has pledged to address the crisis and rebuild confidence in Ghana’s economic stability.
As the nation awaits the formal announcement of results, the celebrations and tensions highlight the high stakes of this pivotal election.
Observers have noted that this election marks a critical turning point for Ghana, often celebrated as a beacon of democracy in West Africa. The peaceful conduct of the polls and Bawumia’s swift concession have been widely praised, reinforcing the country’s tradition of democratic transitions. However, the challenges ahead for Mahama’s administration are significant, with urgent demands for economic reforms, job creation, and measures to restore public trust. As Ghanaians celebrate, the incoming leadership faces the daunting task of steering the nation through its most severe economic storm in decades.
