Kampala, December 2024 — Abdul Matovu, a staunch supporter of Uganda’s opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party, recounts harrowing experiences of abduction, torture, and the difficulties of life after release.

Matovu, who recently spoke to Monitor in Kampala, revealed that he was abducted and held in captivity for a month by unidentified individuals. During his ordeal, he endured severe torture, which has left him grappling with both physical and emotional scars. His story is a chilling reminder of the risks faced by opposition supporters in a political climate fraught with hostility and fear.

“Life after prison is hard,” Matovu shared, reflecting on the challenges of reintegrating into society. “Many things have changed, and I am still battling with the disease. I pray for a full recovery.” His statement underscores the lasting impact of his ordeal, as he struggles to heal and rebuild his life amidst uncertainty.

Matovu’s experience sheds light on the plight of many NUP supporters who allege targeted harassment and abuse due to their political affiliations. The abductions and mistreatment of opposition members have been a recurring theme in Uganda’s tense political environment, drawing condemnation from human rights organizations and activists.

As Matovu continues his journey toward recovery, his story serves as a testament to the resilience of those who dare to challenge the status quo in Uganda, despite the immense personal costs.
