Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has reportedly stated that he never intended to flee Syria, in what is believed to be his first public comment since the fall of Damascus eight days ago.

The statement was shared on Monday via a Telegram channel associated with the Syrian presidency. However, questions remain about the channel’s current control and whether the statement genuinely came from Assad himself.

The statement describes Assad’s actions as Damascus fell to rebel forces. He claimed to have traveled to a Russian military base in Latakia province to oversee combat operations. However, he soon discovered that Syrian troops had abandoned their positions, leaving the situation untenable.

Adding to the chaos, Assad alleged that the Hmeimim airbase, a key Russian military facility, was subjected to intensified drone attacks. In response to the deteriorating security, Russian forces reportedly airlifted him to Moscow for safety.

Assad’s remarks come amid growing speculation about his whereabouts and his role in the unfolding conflict. The fall of Damascus marks a significant shift in Syria’s civil war, raising questions about the future of Assad’s government and the country’s alliances.

As the situation develops, Assad’s purported denial of plans to flee adds another layer of complexity to the narrative surrounding his leadership and Russia’s involvement in the crisis.
