Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has renewed his call for international assistance to combat severe food shortages that are affecting more than one-quarter of the country’s population. The president made the appeal during a televised address on Wednesday evening, highlighting the worsening humanitarian crisis.
According to a recent report by the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee, about 5.7 million people in the nation of 20 million are currently grappling with food insecurity. The crisis is one of the worst the country has faced in decades, with rural areas hit particularly hard. In some regions, villagers have been forced to survive on wild plants, such as buffalo beans, due to the unavailability of food.

President Chakwera emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We are not out of the woods yet. This is why I continue to lobby for international support to address the humanitarian crisis we are facing.” His appeal reflects the urgency of the situation, as Malawi struggles to meet the basic needs of millions of its citizens.
The president’s plea underscores the need for swift and substantial international intervention to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the food shortage. Without significant support, the humanitarian situation in Malawi is expected to deteriorate further.
