Moscow – Russian General Igor Kirillov, a senior official in charge of Russia’s nuclear defense forces, was killed on Tuesday in a targeted bomb attack in Moscow. The incident, which occurred in the early hours, has been claimed by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), according to Al Jazeera sources.
The attack took place on Ryazansky Prospekt, located about 7 kilometers (4 miles) southeast of the Kremlin. A bomb concealed inside an electric scooter exploded near an apartment building, fatally injuring the general. Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed the details in an official statement.

The explosive device used in the attack had an estimated capacity of approximately 300 grams in TNT equivalent, according to Russia’s state news agency TASS, citing law enforcement officials. Investigators and emergency responders were promptly deployed to the scene, which has since been secured for further examination.
This targeted killing represents a significant blow, as Kirillov was a prominent figure within Russia’s nuclear defense establishment. Ukrainian involvement, as claimed by an SBU source, underscores the escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict.
The incident has raised concerns over security in the Russian capital, with authorities vowing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and pursue those responsible.
