Russian President Vladimir Putin has admitted that Russia should have launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine earlier and been better prepared for the conflict. Speaking during his annual end-of-year press conference on Thursday, Putin reflected on the decision-making that led to the 2022 invasion, which he continues to describe as a “special military operation.”

“In hindsight, there should have been systemic preparation for the operation,” Putin said, acknowledging gaps in Russia’s strategic planning. The Russian leader’s comments hint at regret over waiting eight years after the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the onset of conflict in eastern Ukraine to initiate a larger military campaign aimed at seizing Kyiv.

The invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 triggered widespread condemnation and severe sanctions from the international community, plunging Russia into economic and diplomatic isolation. Despite these challenges, Putin remains defiant about the decision and continues to justify the war as necessary for Russia’s security and influence.

During the four-hour-long televised event, Putin also addressed other significant topics. He touched on Russia’s evolving nuclear doctrine, emphasizing a more aggressive posture as tensions with the West continue to escalate. The president also commented on Syria, reflecting on the downfall of its former leader Bashar al-Assad and Russia’s military intervention in the region.

On domestic matters, Putin discussed economic challenges, including rising food prices, with a particular focus on staples like butter. His remarks aimed to reassure Russians that the government is working to stabilize living costs amid the strain of sanctions and war-related expenses.

Putin’s press conference showcased a blend of military assertiveness and domestic concerns, underlining the challenges facing Russia as it navigates both internal and external pressures.
