Protests have erupted across Mozambique following the confirmation of ruling party candidate Daniel Chapo’s victory in October’s contested presidential election. The country’s highest court upheld the election results, intensifying political tensions and triggering widespread demonstrations.

Venâncio Mondlane, the opposition candidate who came second, has been vocal about his allegations of election rigging. Since the polls, he has urged his supporters to take to the streets in protest, accusing the ruling party of manipulating the vote. His calls for action have resonated with many, leading to a wave of demonstrations.
On Monday, protests escalated in several cities, with crowds chanting Mondlane’s name, burning tyres, and barricading roads. Demonstrators also clashed with security forces, hurling stones at police. In response, law enforcement used tear gas to disperse the protesters, heightening the already volatile atmosphere.
The contested election has deepened divisions in Mozambique, with critics accusing the government of suppressing dissent. As tensions continue to rise, the unrest reflects growing frustration among citizens and the opposition’s demand for electoral justice. The situation remains tense as calls for further protests persist.
