Ms. Winnie Byanyima, the wife of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, has delivered a message of encouragement and gratitude to Ugandans on behalf of her husband. This comes after she visited him at Luzira Prison, where he is currently remanded alongside his aide, Hajj Obeid Lutale.
Dr. Besigye and Lutale were reportedly abducted last month in Nairobi, Kenya, and later transferred to Uganda. They now face charges at the General Court Martial, including allegations related to security and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

In her statement, Ms. Byanyima conveyed her husband’s heartfelt thanks to Ugandans for their continued support and solidarity. She shared that Dr. Besigye urged Ugandans to remain resilient and work hard to challenge the current regime, emphasizing that the struggle for freedom extends beyond his personal incarceration.
“He said it’s not only him in prison but all Ugandans,” Ms. Byanyima remarked, reflecting his sentiment that the fight for justice and democracy is a shared responsibility. She further noted his deep gratitude for the love and commitment shown by Ugandans during these challenging times.
Dr. Besigye, a staunch critic of the government and a former presidential candidate, has been a vocal advocate for democracy and human rights in Uganda. His arrest and detention have drawn widespread attention, with supporters calling for justice and transparency in his case.
The situation continues to raise concerns about political freedoms and the treatment of opposition figures in Uganda.
