Kampala, Uganda – A tragic incident unfolded on December 23, 2024, near the Nakasero State Lodge, where a truck driver was shot and killed by a police officer. The deceased, identified as Julius Ssemwaka, was fatally shot near the intersection of Kampala Club and Sheraton Hotel.

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident began when police officers in a patrol vehicle instructed Ssemwaka to reverse his truck, registration number UAX 480C, to allow their vehicle to pass. However, Ssemwaka was unable to comply due to heavy traffic behind him.

Kasumba Kassim, a boda boda rider who witnessed the event, stated that after Ssemwaka failed to reverse, one of the officers, identified as 55915pc Charles Bahati, jumped off the patrol vehicle. The officer allegedly shouted at the driver before firing the fatal shot.

Following the shooting, Bahati fled the scene on a boda boda and is currently on the run. Police have launched a manhunt for him and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Uganda Police Force released a statement confirming the details and assured the public that thorough investigations are underway to ensure justice is served.

This tragic event has sparked public outrage, with many calling for accountability within the police force. Residents and bystanders expressed shock and concern over the excessive use of force by law enforcement officers.

As investigations continue, the family of Julius Ssemwaka and the public are demanding answers and justice for the slain driver.
