Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure that took place on Christmas Day, describing it as a “conscious choice” to cause suffering. The assault, which targeted critical facilities across the country, has resulted in widespread power outages and left civilians seeking shelter amid the ongoing war.

Ukraine’s air force reported that it had detected 184 missiles and drones during the attack. While many were intercepted or failed to hit their intended targets, some struck energy facilities, leading to significant damage. Authorities confirmed casualties from the strikes but have not yet disclosed the exact figures.

In Kyiv, the nation’s capital, residents were forced to shelter in metro stations as power outages affected large parts of the city. Similar disruptions were reported nationwide, exacerbating the challenges Ukrainians face during the harsh winter months.

Moscow has acknowledged the attack, with the Russian Defense Ministry stating that its forces carried out a “massive strike” on what it described as “critical energy facilities” in Ukraine. According to the ministry, the operation was a success, with all targets reportedly hit.

The assault marks the 13th major attack on Ukraine’s energy sector this year, according to DTEK, the country’s largest private energy company. The ongoing strikes on Ukraine’s infrastructure have been a persistent tactic in Russia’s efforts to weaken the nation’s resilience.

Zelensky’s remarks highlight the human cost of the continued aggression, particularly during a time traditionally associated with peace and goodwill. Despite these challenges, Ukrainian authorities have vowed to restore services and support affected communities as they brace for further potential strikes.
