Regional traffic police have stated that the lorry was overloaded, which likely contributed to the deadly crash. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in road safety enforcement in Ethiopia. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances leading to the tragedy.

Disturbing images shared by the state health bureau on Facebook depict rescue efforts to recover the damaged vehicle from the river in Bona district. Other photos show the lifeless bodies of victims, some covered with blue tarpaulin, laid out on the ground as authorities and bystanders look on in shock.

Ethiopia has long grappled with a high number of road accidents, claiming thousands of lives annually. Over-speeding, overloading, and disregard for traffic regulations are often cited as major causes of these incidents. This recent tragedy has once again underscored the urgent need for improved road safety measures in the country.

This devastating event has left families and communities mourning, as the nation reflects on the loss of so many lives in a preventable accident.
