Lubero, North Kivu – A Congolese military tribunal has sentenced 13 soldiers to death for charges including murder, looting, and cowardice. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday in the town of Lubero, situated in the conflict-ridden North Kivu province, where the Congolese army has been battling the M23 insurgency for nearly three years.

The tribunal’s decision is seen as part of an effort to restore discipline within the military ranks. According to the local army spokesperson, Mak Hazukay, the convicted soldiers abandoned their positions during active combat, allowing the enemy to make significant advances.
“Their actions undermined our operations and provided opportunities for the enemy to push forward,” said Hazukay, emphasizing the gravity of the soldiers’ misconduct.
The M23 insurgency has caused significant instability in the region, with widespread violence displacing thousands of civilians. This harsh sentencing underscores the military’s intent to address indiscipline and strengthen its forces against the ongoing rebellion.
While the death penalty remains a controversial punishment, the decision highlights the Congolese army’s challenges in maintaining order and effectiveness in a prolonged conflict.
