The deadly New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans has been confirmed as an act of terrorism, according to the FBI. Fourteen people were killed and dozens more injured when a man drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street. The attack took place on January 1st, and authorities are working swiftly to uncover the full details behind the incident.

FBI officials reported that the attacker acted alone. President Joe Biden, referencing the FBI’s findings, stated that the suspect had planted explosives inside two ice coolers in the French Quarter hours before the incident. These coolers were equipped with remote detonators, and the FBI is currently assessing the details of how the explosives were intended to be used in coordination with the attack.

The assailant, who was killed in a firefight with police shortly after the attack, has been identified as an Army veteran from Texas. Inside his vehicle, authorities found an ISIS flag. The man had recorded videos in the days leading up to the attack in which he claimed allegiance to the terrorist group ISIS.

While the investigation continues, the FBI has stated that there is no clear evidence connecting the New Orleans terror attack with another violent incident—the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside a Trump Hotel in Las Vegas. Investigators are following separate leads to clarify any potential links between the two events.

The tragedy in New Orleans has shaken the community and raised concerns about security during large public gatherings. Local and federal authorities are working together to understand the full scope of the incident and ensure public safety moving forward.
