On January 6, 2024, opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, addressed the media in Kampala following recent threats made against him by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni.
The tension between Bobi Wine and General Muhoozi escalated after Kainerugaba posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, suggesting that his father, whom he referred to as “Mzee,” was the only thing standing between him and his desire to harm Bobi Wine.
In the post, Gen. Muhoozi declared that he wanted to “behead” the opposition leader, an aggressive remark that sparked widespread concern across the country. The comment appeared to be a response to the ongoing political rivalry between the two, which has intensified following Bobi Wine’s 2021 presidential bid.

In his response, Bobi Wine dismissed the threat, stating that while he did not fear Gen. Muhoozi, he did not take such threats lightly. The opposition leader emphasized that Uganda’s political environment had become increasingly toxic, with escalating attacks on his life and character. He reiterated his position, expressing confidence in his ability to continue fighting for democracy and freedom in Uganda, despite the threats.
Moreover, Bobi Wine addressed the accusations made by the government, specifically claims that his 2021 presidential campaign had been funded by the government. He vehemently denied the allegations, stressing that his political movement was driven by the support of ordinary Ugandans and not by any government funds. Bobi Wine further responded to Gen. Muhoozi’s suggestion that he refund the supposed funds used for his campaign, stating that if such money did exist, it was Muhoozi who should be responsible for reimbursing it.
The exchange between the two political figures has added further fuel to the already tense political atmosphere in Uganda, with many questioning the country’s commitment to free and fair political discourse. Bobi Wine’s supporters continue to rally behind him, citing his resilience in the face of such threats and his unwavering stance on Uganda’s democratic future.
