Arsenal suffered a setback in their quest for silverware, losing 2-0 to Newcastle United in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at the Emirates Stadium. The Magpies delivered a clinical performance, putting themselves in a commanding position ahead of the second leg at St. James’ Park.

Mikel Arteta’s side entered the match hoping to regain their attacking spark after a lackluster 1-1 draw against Brighton last weekend, where Ethan Nwaneri’s individual brilliance was their only highlight. However, against Newcastle, Arsenal struggled to break down a well-organized and determined opponent.

Eddie Howe’s team set the tempo from the outset, employing a high press and committing numbers forward. Despite Newcastle’s dominance, Arsenal nearly took the lead early on when Gabriel Martinelli hit the post after a well-executed counterattack.

The visitors made their pressure count just before halftime. Alexander Isak capitalized on a precise Jacob Murphy pass, calmly finishing past David Raya to give Newcastle the lead.

Newcastle doubled their advantage early in the second half. Isak’s initial effort was saved by Raya, but Anthony Gordon was in the right place to convert the rebound, putting the Magpies firmly in control.

Arsenal pushed forward in search of a response, but Newcastle’s disciplined defense and efficient game management nullified the Gunners’ efforts. Eddie Howe’s side held firm, securing a vital clean sheet and a two-goal cushion heading into the second leg.

Arsenal now faces a daunting challenge in the return fixture, needing a standout performance at St. James’ Park to keep their hopes of reaching the final alive. Meanwhile, Newcastle edges closer to their first major domestic cup final since 1999.
