President-elect Donald Trump has intensified his rhetoric regarding the United States’ acquisition of Greenland and the Panama Canal, both of which he has repeatedly described as crucial to the nation’s economic and national security. During a recent press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump was asked by a reporter whether he would rule out the use of military or economic force to take control of either territory.

Trump’s response was unequivocal: “No, I can’t assure you on either of those two,” implying that such an approach could still be on the table. Despite the ambiguity of his statement, he emphasized the importance of both regions to U.S. interests. “But I can say this, we need them for economic security,” Trump asserted, highlighting his belief that controlling these strategic locations would be beneficial to America’s broader security and economic goals.
The remarks come amid growing speculation about Trump’s intentions toward both Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, and the Panama Canal, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The president-elect’s comments have sparked concern and confusion, as it remains unclear whether they reflect genuine plans for territorial acquisition or are simply part of a broader negotiation tactic.
However, both Denmark and Panama have firmly rejected any notion of relinquishing control over these territories. Denmark has been steadfast in defending Greenland’s autonomy, while Panama has equally dismissed any suggestion of allowing foreign control of the canal.
The international community is closely watching Trump’s statements, with some observers questioning whether his rhetoric signals a new phase in U.S. foreign policy or is merely a provocative stance designed to further his strategic objectives. Despite the pushback from the countries involved, Trump’s declarations suggest that he will continue to pursue aggressive policies regarding these key geopolitical assets.
