The political scene has been shaken by the tragic news of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya’s death early this morning. The Member of Parliament for Kawempe North succumbed to complications resulting from an illness he developed while incarcerated. His passing comes after a long and difficult period, during which he was imprisoned under what many consider to be false charges.
Ssegirinya, a prominent figure in Uganda’s opposition politics and a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), was falsely accused of orchestrating the notorious Masaka massacres. Despite being accused of such heinous crimes, he was never afforded a fair trial, and his prolonged detention was widely viewed as politically motivated. The charges against him, some believe, were an attempt by the ruling NRM party to silence a vocal opposition leader and to weaken his influence within the political landscape.

While in prison, Hon. Ssegirinya’s health deteriorated significantly. His conditions were reportedly harsh, and the lack of adequate medical care contributed to his declining health. By the time he was released, he was frail and in poor physical condition, which led to his premature demise.
News of his death has sent shockwaves throughout Uganda, with many political leaders, activists, and supporters expressing their sorrow over the loss of a man who had fought tirelessly for the rights and freedoms of his constituents. The leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP) is already in discussions with Ssegirinya’s family to make preliminary arrangements regarding his funeral and the next steps.
The death of Hon. Ssegirinya has also stirred political tensions, with some criticizing the ruling government for the role they played in his ill-health and eventual death. “Kitalo nnyo, kitalo ddala!” (What a great loss, what a great sadness!) was the sentiment expressed by many, especially those who viewed his arrest and subsequent suffering as a form of political persecution.
Moreover, as the NUP leadership prepares for the funeral, there are concerns about the potential political ramifications of his death. Speculation is already circulating about the possibility of a by-election in the Kawempe North constituency. This is seen by some as an opportunity for the NRM to further entrench its influence, while others believe it could be a pivotal moment for the opposition to rally around Ssegirinya’s legacy.
The situation at Lubaga Hospital, where the late Hon. Ssegirinya’s body is currently, is calm but tense. While the family is still coming to terms with their loss, political figures from both sides of the aisle are expected to arrive in the coming days to pay their respects.
Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya’s life and death remain symbolic of the struggles faced by opposition figures in Uganda, many of whom are subjected to harsh treatment, imprisonment, and even death under the current political regime. His passing serves as a poignant reminder of the toll that political persecution can take on individuals and their families.
As the nation mourns, all eyes are now on the coming days, as discussions surrounding his legacy, funeral arrangements, and the future of the Kawempe North constituency take center stage.
