David Moyes is reportedly on the brink of a sensational return to Goodison Park as Everton’s manager. The move comes amid significant upheaval at the club, with new owners, The Friedkin Group, taking swift action by parting ways with Sean Dyche. Moyes, who previously spent 11 successful years at Everton, is regarded as one of the most influential managers in the club’s recent history. His potential comeback has sparked excitement and speculation as Everton looks to stabilize their Premier League campaign.

Speculation has swirled all week about Sean Dyche’s position as Everton manager, intensified by the club’s inquiry on Monday to representatives of Graham Potter. This inquiry coincided with West Ham’s search for a new manager, during which David Sullivan was interviewing candidates to succeed Julen Lopetegui.
The situation surrounding Dyche has been under close scrutiny by The Friedkin Group, whose takeover of Everton from Farhad Moshiri was finalized on December 19 last year. Concerns about Dyche’s tenure were heightened following last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth, which extended Everton’s poor run to just one win in their last 11 matches.

Sean Dyche was reportedly on the verge of leaving Everton on Wednesday night, but he returned to Finch Farm on Thursday morning to oversee a light training session. Despite his presence, the atmosphere around the club remained tense. By mid-afternoon, just four hours before kick-off, the decision was made to bring his two-year tenure to an end.
Everton released a brief, four-sentence statement confirming that Dyche, along with his coaching staff—Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard, and Billy Mercer—had departed. The club also announced that the search for a new manager was already underway.
While initial speculation linked Jose Mourinho—who has ties to The Friedkin Group at Roma—with the role, it quickly became evident that David Moyes was the leading candidate. Moyes, who previously managed Everton from February 2002 to May 2013, emerged as the clear favorite to return to Goodison Park.

David Moyes was previously in line to return to Everton and even interviewed with Farhad Moshiri in Munich in December 2019. However, at the last moment, the Iranian billionaire opted to appoint Carlo Ancelotti instead.
The appeal of Moyes is clear: he is well-regarded by supporters, readily available, and possesses extensive Premier League experience—qualities that make him an ideal candidate to guide Everton away from the looming threat of relegation. With the club set to move into a new stadium next season, avoiding the drop is an absolute priority.
Clarity is expected on Friday when Moyes is scheduled to meet Everton officials, including Director of Football Kevin Thelwell. Thelwell had informed the squad at the Titanic Hotel on Thursday that Sean Dyche had been sacked.
Meanwhile, Everton’s Chief Executive, Colin Chong, communicated the news to other staff members, many of whom were surprised by the timing of the decision. Marc Watts, the newly appointed executive chairman under the Friedkin Group, was notably out of the country during these developments.
