On Thursday, January 9, a remarkable display of political unity took place at the Washington National Cathedral as five former and current U.S. presidents, alongside other notable political figures, came together to honor the late former President Jimmy Carter.
Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 the previous week, was remembered by a diverse group of political leaders from across the American political spectrum.

Seated in the front rows of the cathedral were President Joe Biden, former Presidents Donald Trump, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. This rare gathering of U.S. presidents, each with their own political legacy, highlighted the enduring respect and admiration for Carter, who was known for his post-presidential humanitarian efforts.
The funeral also saw the presence of key political figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris, who had faced off against Trump in the 2020 presidential election, as well as former Vice Presidents Mike Pence and Al Gore. Also attending was Hillary Clinton, the former Secretary of State who had famously contested Trump for the presidency in 2016, seated beside her husband, former President Bill Clinton.
In his eulogy, President Biden focused on Carter’s profound legacy, particularly his commitment to public service and his character. Biden praised Carter for establishing a “model post-presidency” by making a significant impact as a private citizen in the United States, emphasizing the importance of making every moment in life count. “To make every minute of our time on earth count, that’s the very definition of a good life,” Biden said, urging attendees to reflect on the example Carter set.
Biden also shared personal memories of his long relationship with Carter, recalling how he was the first senator to endorse Carter’s presidential bid. Their bond, forged over decades, was evident in Biden’s heartfelt words as he honored Carter’s dedication to improving the lives of others, both during and after his presidency.
Carter’s funeral brought together leaders of different political affiliations, highlighting the respect he garnered across party lines. It was a poignant reminder of his legacy as not only a former president but as a man who sought to make a meaningful difference in the world, long after leaving the White House.
