Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede announced on Monday that the territory is seeking to enhance cooperation with the United States, particularly in the areas of defence and the exploration of its vast mining resources. Egede’s remarks come amid heightened interest from US President-elect Donald Trump in expanding America’s influence over Greenland, a move that could include both military and economic involvement.

Egede highlighted that his government is looking for ways to collaborate with the incoming administration, noting the strategic importance of Greenland to the US. As a largely autonomous territory of Denmark, Greenland is positioned on the shortest route from North America to Europe, making it a critical location for US military and security interests. In addition to its geographical significance, Greenland is also home to a major American space facility and is believed to possess some of the largest deposits of rare earth minerals—resources crucial for the production of batteries and high-tech devices.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister also expressed support for further discussions with the US, stressing the importance of maintaining dialogue with President-elect Trump to protect legitimate American interests in the Arctic region.

This is not the first time Trump has shown interest in Greenland; during his first term in 2019, he made an attempt to purchase the territory, which was firmly rejected by the Greenlandic government. Despite this, Trump has reinvigorated the issue, calling Greenland’s control an “absolute necessity” for both American and international security as he prepares for his second term.

In response, Prime Minister Egede reiterated that Greenland is not, and will not be, “for sale.” However, he emphasized the importance of remaining open to cooperation and trade with countries across the globe, seeking mutually beneficial partnerships while asserting Greenland’s sovereignty.

As tensions rise over Arctic geopolitics, Greenland’s strategic location, abundant resources, and growing geopolitical significance are likely to continue drawing attention from major powers, particularly the United States.
