At least 16 civilians were killed in a military air strike in north-western Nigeria’s Zamfara State, after being mistakenly identified as criminal gangs. The victims, according to local residents, were members of vigilante groups and civilians who had been actively defending their communities from armed gangs involved in kidnapping for ransom.

The Nigerian military conducted air strikes targeting militant groups in the Zurmi and Maradun areas. These operations were part of an effort to combat the increasing violence perpetrated by criminal gangs, which have been terrorizing villages in the region. Following the incident, the governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, expressed his condolences to the affected community.

The Nigerian military confirmed that air strikes had been carried out and claimed that they had successfully struck several bandits, resulting in the recovery of kidnapped victims. However, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) acknowledged the tragic loss of civilian lives and expressed concern over the reports of vigilante casualties.

The NAF released a statement saying that an investigation into the incident was underway. The investigation aims to determine the full details of what occurred and will provide information to the public to ensure transparency and accountability. The military emphasized its commitment to addressing the concerns raised by the loss of civilian life during the operation.
