Kenyan Minister Justin Muturi, who serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, has accused the country’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) of being behind the abduction of his son, Leslie Muturi, last year. This marks the first time a member of Kenya’s cabinet has publicly criticized the government’s handling of the rising cases of abductions, which have sparked widespread concern.

In a statement submitted to the police crime investigations unit on Tuesday, Muturi detailed how his son was abducted on June 22, 2024. He revealed that it was only after intervention by President William Ruto that his son was released by the intelligence agency. However, neither President Ruto nor the NIS has issued a public response to Muturi’s allegations.
The abduction of Leslie Muturi is part of a broader troubling trend in Kenya, where at least 80 individuals, including the minister’s son, have been forcibly taken over the last six months. According to a state-funded rights group, the wave of abductions began in June 2024, following widespread protests against controversial tax hikes. These incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of citizens and the role of security agencies in the country’s internal conflicts.
As the number of abductions continues to rise, the government’s handling of the situation has come under increasing scrutiny, with many calling for accountability and action to address the growing crisis.
