In Sudan’s war-torn western Darfur region, Dr. Mustafa Ali Abdulrahman Ibo and his colleagues are performing life-saving surgeries under extraordinary circumstances in the last remaining hospital in el-Fasher. The hospital, which has been under siege for the last nine months, is facing intense bombardment, leaving the medical staff and patients in constant danger.

Over the past month, Saudi Hospital in el-Fasher has recorded 28 deaths and more than 50 injuries among its staff and patients due to ongoing shelling. This has marked the highest number of casualties in a single month since the siege began. The hospital, already under immense pressure, continues to function as the only medical facility left in the area, despite being targeted by airstrikes and artillery fire.

Dr. Ibo, who has lived in el-Fasher since 2011, shared the terrifying reality of their daily lives with the BBC, saying that the relentless attacks on the hospital have become a regular part of their routine. He recalled the most harrowing experience when a surgical team was conducting an emergency caesarean section while shelling erupted around them.

“The first shell hit the hospital’s perimeter wall, and then another shell hit the maternity operating room. The blast damaged the electrical generator, cutting off the power and plunging us into complete darkness,” Dr. Ibo described. Despite the chaos, the surgical team persevered, using the light from their mobile phones to continue the critical two-hour operation.

As the room filled with dust and shrapnel from the blast, Dr. Khatab Mohammed, who led the surgery, detailed the dangers they faced. With part of the building collapsed and debris scattered across the room, the medical team was forced to navigate the perilous environment to save lives.

The courage and determination of these medics have become a symbol of resilience in the face of unprecedented danger. Despite the dire conditions, they continue to provide medical care to those in desperate need, often at great personal risk.
