TikTok Resumes Service in the US After Trump’s Pledge to Delay Ban.

TikTok has resumed services to its 170 million users in the United States after President-elect Donald Trump intervened to delay the implementation of a law that would have banned the popular Chinese-owned app. The app had been blocked for American users on Saturday evening after a national security law came into effect, banning TikTok from operating in the country.

The law, which was upheld by the Supreme Court on Friday, required TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell its US operations to avoid the ban. However, Trump, who had previously supported a potential ban on the platform, announced on Sunday that he would issue an executive order to delay the law’s enforcement. This would allow more time for negotiations to take place and possibly reach a solution that would keep TikTok in the US.

Shortly after Trump’s announcement, TikTok confirmed that it was in the process of restoring its service. The app soon began functioning again for American users, and a popup message appeared on the platform thanking Trump by name. The message expressed appreciation for the incoming president’s efforts to “provide the necessary clarity and assurance” regarding TikTok’s future in the United States. The company also stated its intention to work with Trump’s administration on a “long-term solution” that would allow TikTok to continue operating in the country.

TikTok’s CEO, Shou Chew, is expected to attend Trump’s inauguration on Monday, underscoring the importance of the ongoing negotiations. In a post on Truth Social, Trump’s own social media platform, the president-elect urged companies not to allow TikTok to remain blocked. He confirmed that an executive order would be issued on Monday, which would extend the deadline for implementing the law, thus providing more time for a potential deal.

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, had previously ignored the law’s requirements to sell its US operations, a decision that led to the legal battle. The Supreme Court’s ruling and the subsequent implementation of the law were seen as a significant challenge to TikTok’s continued operation in the United States. However, with Trump’s intervention, the app’s fate now appears to be on hold, pending further negotiations.
