WASHINGTON — Moments after being sworn in as president on Monday, Donald Trump declared it “Liberation Day,” vowing that “the golden age of America begins right now” with a bold “revolution of common sense.”
At 78 years old, Trump began his second non-consecutive term during a scaled-down ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda, attended by roughly 600 guests. The event was moved indoors due to dangerously cold weather, with wind chills plunging to 16 degrees.
“I have been tested and challenged more than any president in our 250-year history, and I’ve learned a lot along the way,” Trump said. “The journey to reclaim our republic has not been an easy one, that I can tell you.”

“Those who wish to stop our cause have tried to take my freedom—and even my life. Just a few months ago, in a beautiful Pennsylvania field, an assassin’s bullet grazed my ear. In that moment, I felt—and now believe more than ever—that my life was spared for a reason. I was saved by God to make America great again,” Trump declared.
The oath of office was administered by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. Immediately afterward, Trump shook hands with outgoing President Joe Biden in a symbolic gesture of transition.

“From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected once again on the global stage. We will become the envy of every nation, and we will no longer allow ourselves to be taken advantage of,” Trump declared. “Every single day of the Trump administration, I will unapologetically put America first.”
President Biden, 82, stood alongside Trump after the two traveled together by car from the White House, where they had met privately before the ceremony. Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Trump defeated to win his second non-consecutive term, also attended, along with the spouses of both Biden and Harris.
“Our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our safety will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced. The vicious, violent, and unfair weaponization of the Justice Department and our government will come to an end,” Trump vowed.
“Our top priority is to create a nation that is proud, prosperous, and free. America will soon be greater, stronger, and more exceptional than ever before.”
