Two prominent Nigerian pastors, William Kumuyi and Nathaniel Bassey, were among the international guests who took part in events surrounding the inauguration of US President Donald Trump on January 20, 2017. Their involvement underscored the growing ties between Christian evangelism and the incoming US administration.

Pastor William Kumuyi, the founder of Deeper Life Bible Church and convener of the Global Crusade With Kumuyi, was invited to attend Trump’s swearing-in ceremony.

However, he was unable to attend the inauguration after the event was moved indoors due to inclement weather. Instead, he participated in a prayer service dedicated to the new president and engaged with various political groups. Kumuyi’s invitation was particularly notable, as it broke from tradition—while Trump invited world leaders from countries such as China, Italy, and Argentina, there were no African heads of state on the guest list. Kumuyi’s presence at the event highlighted the influence of religious leaders from Africa in global politics, particularly among Christian evangelicals.

In addition to Pastor Kumuyi’s participation, Nathaniel Bassey, a well-known Nigerian gospel minister, performed at the US Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast on the morning of the inauguration. This faith-based event, although not part of the official inauguration celebrations, provided a platform for Bassey to share his music and ministry. The breakfast was attended by a variety of faith leaders and government officials, though President-elect Trump did not attend.

Pastor Kumuyi, who has long been an advocate for global evangelism, also used his time in Washington DC to meet with members of the conservative youth group Turning Point USA. The meeting focused on how they could collaborate to further the cause of global evangelism, emphasizing the growing intersection of religion and politics in both the United States and Africa.

Through their participation, both Kumuyi and Bassey reinforced the significant role that African Christian leaders play in shaping global religious and political discourse, particularly in relation to evangelical movements in the US.
