A Kampala court has dismissed a case of common nuisance against Kira Municipality Member of Parliament, Ssemujju Nganda, and 13 other members of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga faction. The case stemmed from an incident that occurred on August 5, 2024, when the group, including Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, marched to the Kenyan Embassy in Kampala to protest the arrest of 36 party supporters in Kisumu, Kenya.

The prosecution had claimed that the group, along with others still at large, engaged in activities that were not authorized by law. They were accused of being rowdy and obstructing walkways, thereby causing inconvenience to the public in the exercise of their common rights. The charges were based on the allegation that the actions of the group amounted to a public nuisance.
However, Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayiizi ruled in favor of the accused, dismissing the case due to the government’s failure to present adequate evidence. The prosecution had not provided sufficient proof to substantiate the allegations of common nuisance against the defendants, which included notable figures such as Nyanjura, Kabale Municipality MP Nicholas Thaddeus Kamara, party leaders Ronald Mugume, Harold Kaija, and Wahab Musinguzi, among others.
The dismissal of the case is seen as a significant win for the accused members of the FDC Katonga faction, who had been facing legal challenges over their involvement in the August 5 protest.
