Namibia’s former First Lady, Monica Geingos, has issued a video message to warn the public about fraudsters using her name and likeness in fraudulent schemes. The manipulated videos, which have been circulating on social media for some time, falsely depict Geingos promoting a foreign exchange (forex) investment opportunity. The fraudsters are using her image to deceive unsuspecting citizens into participating in these schemes.

Geingos’ spokesperson revealed that several people have fallen victim to these fraudulent activities, including one woman who lost her entire retirement savings. Despite the issue being raised by her team for nearly two years, the former first lady’s appeal comes after the situation has escalated significantly in recent months.

In her video message, Geingos emphasized the growing prevalence of these fake messages, stating that the volume of such content has increased dramatically over the past two months. The manipulation of her likeness has become “ubiquitous across social media platforms,” and she felt compelled to speak out publicly for the first time.

Monica Geingos, who is a lawyer and businesswoman, highlighted the importance of raising awareness, urging the public to remain vigilant against these fraudulent schemes. Her husband, Hage Geingob, served as Namibia’s president from 2015 until his passing in 2024. Despite his passing, Geingos continues to advocate for the protection of Namibians from such scams.

Her message serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of social media fraud and the need for increased awareness and caution when encountering investment opportunities online.

Geingos’ appeal also underscores the broader issue of online scams that have been plaguing individuals across the globe. As technology advances, so do the tactics of fraudsters who exploit the public’s trust in well-known figures to carry out their deceptive schemes.

The former first lady’s proactive response aims not only to protect vulnerable citizens but also to raise awareness about the risks associated with social media and online financial investments. By making this personal appeal, she hopes to empower the public to recognize and report such fraudulent activities, thereby reducing the number of victims affected by these scams.
