
On January 26, 2025, a sudden lightning strike at Kirinya Prison left 12 inmates hospitalized, with three of them suffering from serious burns. The incident occurred while the prisoners were attending general Sunday prayers at the facility.
According to reliable sources, the lightning struck as the inmates gathered for their regular religious service, causing chaos and panic among the group. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, transporting the injured individuals to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

The severity of the strike led to significant injuries, with three inmates reported to have sustained serious burns. The remaining nine inmates were treated for less severe injuries and are said to be in stable condition.
The incident has raised concerns regarding the safety measures in place at the prison, especially during adverse weather conditions. Authorities have yet to comment on any potential steps to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The hospital, located in Jinja, is currently overseeing the treatment of the victims, and an investigation into the event is underway.
