Nearly 1,000 arrests were made in a single day as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ramped up its efforts to carry out President Donald Trump’s promise of mass deportations.

The crackdown took place on Sunday, with ICE focusing its efforts on several key locations, including the sanctuary city of Chicago, as well as areas in Miami and New Jersey. These raids are part of a broader initiative by the Trump administration to tighten immigration enforcement and remove individuals living in the country without legal status.

The timing of these deportation efforts coincides with a significant downturn in U.S. tech stocks, triggered by the emergence of a new artificial intelligence chatbot developed by a Chinese competitor. While the stock market slump has captured considerable attention, the administration’s focus on immigration enforcement remains a central issue, with the raids representing an intensification of Trump’s hardline immigration policies.

The impact of the administration’s immigration stance is also being felt internationally. A diplomatic dispute emerged between the United States and Colombia after two U.S. military flights carrying deported migrants were barred from landing in Colombia. In response, the Trump administration threatened to impose tariffs on Colombian exports to the U.S. As tensions escalated, Colombia ultimately agreed to allow the flights to land, resolving the immediate conflict.

In addition to the immigration crackdown, President Trump is expected to sign three executive orders on Monday, addressing military policies and diversity initiatives. The orders are set to focus on the status of transgender military service members, the reinstatement of troops discharged for refusing the Covid vaccine, and the continuation of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within the military and federal agencies. These actions demonstrate the administration’s ongoing emphasis on reshaping U.S. military and immigration policies.
