US President Donald Trump has announced a decision to impose a 25% tariff on all goods coming into the United States from Colombia, after Colombian President Gustavo Petro denied entry to two US military planes carrying deported migrants. Trump stated that the tariffs would be implemented “immediately,” with plans to escalate them to 50% in one week’s time if no resolution is reached.

The disagreement stems from Petro’s refusal to allow the US military aircraft to land in Colombia. The Colombian president justified the move by stating that the deported migrants should be treated with dignity and respect, and that they should return to Colombia on civilian flights rather than being “treated like criminals” on military planes. Petro emphasized the importance of ensuring that Colombian nationals are received in a manner that reflects the country’s values.

In response to Trump’s tariff announcement, President Petro declared that Colombia would impose retaliatory tariffs of 25% on US goods. This marks a significant escalation in the already tense relationship between the two countries, particularly over the handling of deported migrants.
